Remove Location From a Photo

See what a photo gives away - the spot it was taken, when, and on what phone - then download a clean copy. It all happens in your browser: the photo is never uploaded.

Check a Photo for Location

Pick a photo to see what it gives away. It stays on your device - nothing is uploaded.

Which apps send the location along?

The location only leaks when the original file is passed on. Some apps make a new copy without it; others send the file exactly as it is.

How you send itLocation
WhatsApp, sent as a photoRemoved
WhatsApp, sent as a documentKept
iMessage or AirDropKept, unless you turn Location off under Options
Email attachmentKept
Google Drive, Dropbox or iCloud linkKept (the original file is shared)
Google Photos shared linkKept, unless you turn on “Remove geo location in items shared by link”
Facebook or Instagram postRemoved from the copy other people see

Apps change how they handle photos from time to time. If it matters, check a sent copy with the tool above.

Why it matters for photos of children

A photo taken in your garden carries your home’s position. A run of photos from the same school gate, park or childminder adds a routine. None of that is visible in the picture, which is why it gets passed on without anyone noticing.

You don’t need to stop sharing. Know which apps keep the location, clean anything that’s going to people outside the family, and think twice before a photo goes somewhere public. For the bigger picture, read what the research says about sharenting and what digital kidnapping is.

Share Baby Photos With Family Only

Clann is a private family photo app. It’s end-to-end encrypted: photos and videos are encrypted on your phone before they upload, and only your family’s own devices can open them. No public posting, no strangers - and grandparents can view through a simple web link, no app required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool upload my photo?

No. The photo is read and cleaned by your own browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to Clann or anyone else - you can turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works.

Do photos show where they were taken?

Often, yes. If your phone’s camera has location access, every photo it takes records the GPS position inside the file, usually accurate to a few metres. Most phones ask for that permission the first time you open the camera, and most people say yes. The position travels with the file wherever the original goes.

Does WhatsApp remove location from photos?

When you send a picture the normal way, as a photo, WhatsApp compresses it and strips the location. When you send it as a document (often done to keep full quality), the original file goes as it is, location included.

Do iMessage, AirDrop and email keep the location?

Yes, by default. On an iPhone you can switch it off per share: tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn Location off. Email attachments send the original file, location and all.

How do I remove the location from a photo on iPhone?

Open the photo in Photos, swipe up (or tap the i button), tap Adjust next to the location and choose No Location. That changes it in your library. To keep the location in your library but leave it out of what you send, use Options > Location in the share sheet instead, or clean a copy with the tool above.

How do I stop my phone saving location in photos?

iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera > Never. Android: open the Camera app’s settings and turn off the location option (called Save location on Pixel phones and Location tags on Samsung). The trade-off is that your own photo library can no longer sort photos by place.

Does removing the location reduce photo quality?

Not with this tool. It removes the hidden text around the picture and leaves the picture itself byte for byte as it was - no re-compression. It keeps one detail, which way up the photo goes, so portrait shots don’t come out sideways.

Can I remove the location from a video?

Videos record location too, but this tool only handles photos (JPEG, HEIC, PNG and WebP). On an iPhone, tap Options in the share sheet and turn Location off before sending a video.

What else is hidden in a photo besides location?

Usually the exact date and time it was taken, the phone or camera model, lens and software version. Some cameras also store a serial number or the owner’s name. The tool above shows what your photo carries and removes all of it.
